As global economic growth brings about a large increase in human and logistical mobility, taking effective measures against the threat of communicable diseases has become one of the most important challenges not only for individual countries but for the wider international community also.

Under such circumstances, Nikkei Inc. has been organizing the annual Nikkei Asian Conference on Communicable Diseases since 2014, gathering internationally renowned experts in the field, both within and outside Japan, representatives of the private sector, and high-ranking government officials responsible for health. This year we will widen our scope to Africa by renaming the conference "Nikkei Asia Africa Conference on Communicable Diseases". Under the recognition that Japan has a significant role to play in the fight against communicable diseases, the conference will provide a place for more fruitful discussion, combating the increasing cross-border risk of the communicable disease outbreaks occurring in Asia, Africa and worldwide.

Through the open discussions between government, industry, and academia, the conference has proposed concrete and practical action plans each year. Adding to its annual conference, the members work closely throughout the year to implement such action plans by establishing a consortium that accompanies the statement. Two perfect examples of this are the TB Consortium and Malaria Consortium, that take the form of PDPs (Product Development by Public Private Partnership) to bring into the world Japan’s diagnostic and treatment technologies that contribute to the elimination of multi drug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria. The fruits of the TB Consortium led to lively discussion at our side event at United Nations High-Level Meeting on Tuberculosis, in September 2018, ever widening the range of stakeholders surrounding the issue. " Asian Communicable Diseases Clinical Research Center" Consortium has also been launched, reflecting the strong need for establishing such strategic foothold.

The 6th Nikkei Asia Africa Conference on Communicable Diseases is to be held in Yokohama on 31st August -1st September, following the TICAD7. The productive outcomes of the conference will be disseminated around the world through Nikkei’s diverse media network, driving the momentum even further.

　グローバル経済の発展にともない、感染症リスクへの対応は一国にとどまらず国際社会全体にとって看過できない喫緊の課題となっています。

　こうした認識のもと、日本経済新聞社は2014年をスタートに、国内外から感染症対策にかかわる行政機関・団体・学会など産官学すべてのステークホルダーを一堂に集め、「日経アジア感染症会議」を開催してきました。第６回となる今回は会議の名称を「日経アジア・アフリカ感染症会議」と改めて、アフリカに射程を広げ、国境を越えて広がる感染症リスクに立ち向かう実り多い議論の場を目指します。

　会議の議論内容は開催地の名前を取り、第1回、第2回、第4回、第5回会議を「沖縄感染症ステートメント」として、また、第３回会議を「東京感染症ステートメント」としてまとめ、感染症対策における日本の役割の重要性と具体的なアクションプランを提案してきました。

　その具体策の一つである「日経アジア感染症会議・結核コンソーシアム」では結核に関する日本発の診断・治療技術の実用化へ向けたイニシアチブを国に対して提案。日本発の技術がグローバルな舞台に躍り出る直接のきっかけとなりました。第３回会議では「同・マラリアコンソーシアム」が発足。いずれのコンソーシアムも年間を通じて活動し、それぞれの疾病について抜本的な対策を打ち出す土台づくりに取り組んでいます。第４回会議ではこうしたコンソーシアムの成果に加え、薬剤耐性（AMR）や公衆衛生における日本のイニシアチブを議論し、「同・アジア感染症臨床試験センター・コンソーシアム」も発足しました。コンソーシアムの活動は会議内部にとどまらず、国内外の政府や関連団体を巻き込んで議論の場を広げつつあります。2018年9月には結核に関する国連ハイレベル会合のサイドイベントを開催し、ステークホルダーの幅をいっそう拡大しました。また、第５回会議でマラリア対策や臨床試験プラットフォームの検討が進むなか、地理的にも議論の対象がアジアの域に収まらないことを再認識し、会議の名称に「アフリカ」を追加することで、よりグローバルなスコープをもつ会議体に進化させることになりました。

　アフリカが新たな議題となったことを発信するため、第６回会議は名称変更とともに2019年8月末に開催されるTICAD（アフリカ開発会議）に連動して横浜で開催し、より多くのステークホルダーを巻き込みながら実効性の高いアクションプランを議論していきます。

　今回も会議の成果はステートメントとして取りまとめ、日本経済新聞社のグローバルメディアを通じ国内のみならず国際社会に向けて幅広く情報発信し、感染症対策における日本発のリーダーシップを確たるものとします。
