As global economic growth brings about large increase of human and logistical mobility, taking effective measures against the threat of communicable diseases has become one of the most important challenges for not only a country, but also for the international society.

Under such circumstance, Nikkei Inc. has been organizing the annual Nikkei Asian Conference on Communicable Diseases since 2014, gathering internationally renowned experts in the area, both within and outside Japan, representatives of the private sector, and high-ranking government officials responsible for health.
Conference participants reaffirmed the imminent threat posed by communicable disease and the importance of stepping up efforts to address such threat, agreeing that Japan has a significant role to play in the fight against communicable disease in Asia and worldwide.

Through the open discussions among government, industry, and academia, the conference not only proposes concrete and practical action plans, but also works closely throughout the year to implement such action plans by establishing a consortium that accompanies the statement. One ideal examples are TB Consortium and Malaria Consortium, that take forms of PDPs (Product Development by Public Private Partnership) to bring into the world Japan’s diagnostic and treatment technologies that contribute to elimination of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria.

The 5th Nikkei Asian Conference on Communicable Diseases is to be held on 2nd-3rd, February, 2018 in Okinawa. The fruits of the conference will be disseminated around the world through Nikkei’s diverse media network, driving the momentum further on.

　グローバル経済の発展にともない、感染症リスクへの対応は一国にとどまらず国際社会全体にとって看過できない喫緊の課題となっています。

　こうした認識のもと、日本経済新聞社は2014年をスタートに、国内外より感染症対策に関連する行政機関・団体・学会など、産官学すべてのステークホルダーを一堂に集め、「日経アジア感染症会議」を開催してまいりました。第1回、第2回、第4回会議の議論内容は開催地である沖縄の名前を取り「沖縄感染症ステートメント」としてまとめ、感染症対策における日本・沖縄の役割の重要性と、具体的かつ実効性のあるアクションプランを提案してまいりました。

　その具体策の一つである「日経アジア感染症会議・結核コンソーシアム」では結核に関する日本発の診断・治療技術の実用化へ向けたイニシアチブを国に対して提案、結果、日本発の技術がグローバルな場に躍り出る直接のきっかけを作るに至りました。また、東京で開催された第3回会議では「同・マラリアコンソーシアム」を発足。年間の活動を通じ、マラリアにおける抜本的な対策を打ち出す土台作りを目指します。第4回会議は再度沖縄県で開催され、こうしたコンソーシアムの具体的成果に加え、薬剤耐性（AMR）や公衆衛生における日本のイニシアチブを議論。「同・アジア感染症臨床試験センター・コンソーシアム」の発足に向けたコンセンサスが形成されました。

　「第5回日経アジア感染症会議」は、アジアにおける感染症対策の拠点となることを目指す沖縄県の協力のもと、再度沖縄で開催し、感染症対策における日本のイニシアチブのあり方に加え、沖縄感染症研究拠点の構築および同拠点のアジアとの連携の形作りに向けた具体的アクションプランを議論していきます。また、会議の成果をステートメントとして取りまとめ、日本経済新聞社のグローバルメディアを通じ国内のみならずアジア域内に向けて幅広く情報発信し、感染症対策における日本発のリーダーシップを確たるものとします。
