The 7th Nikkei FT
Communicable Diseases Conference
‘Yokohama Communicable Diseases Statement 2020’

The COVID-19 Pandemic has proven that as global economic growth brings about a large increase in human and logistical mobility, taking effective measures against the threat of communicable diseases has become one of the most important challenges not only for individual countries but also for the wider international community.

Nikkei Inc. has been organizing the annual Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference (formerly named as Nikkei Asia Africa Conference on Communicable Diseases) since 2014, gathering internationally renowned experts in the field; representatives of the private sector, academia and high-ranking government officials responsible for health, both within and outside Japan.

Conference participants have reaffirmed the imminent threat posed by communicable diseases and the importance of stepping up efforts to address such threats, agreeing that Japan has a significant role to play in the fight against communicable diseases in Asia and worldwide. The conference title has been renewed to Nikkei Asia Africa Conference on Communicable Diseases since the 6th conference held in 2019, and then to Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference in 2020.

Through the open discussions between government, industry, and academia, the conference not only proposes concrete and practical action plans, but also works closely throughout the year to implement such action plans by establishing a consortium that accompanies the statement. As of today, five consortiums (TB, Malaria, Ebola, Asian Clinical Trials Platform, and AMR) have been established and are taking actions in the form of PDPs (Product Development by Public Private Partnership) to lead the initiatives which will globally contribute in each area by bringing diagnostic and treatment technologies into implementation in most effective ways.

The 7th Nikkei FT Communicable Diseases Conference will be held on November 6th - 7th 2020 in Yokohama. The fruitful outcomes of the conference will be disseminated around the world through Nikkei’s diverse media network, driving the momentum even further.
